Queer Mindfulness

Mindfulness meditation is the technique of placing our attention on the present moment and then seeing what arises without judgment or bias. While beneficial to anyone, mindfulness can be a tremendous asset to members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

By training the mind to be grounded in the present moment, we can begin to see things as they actually are. Those of us with queer identities often hear messages that seek to marginalize us or make us feel that we are less than others who frame themselves as "normal". Mindfulness can cut through those destructive messages and help us to see clearly that we are inherently worthy as we are. We are not broken. We are human, and our value is rooted in the very fact that we are human. There is nothing to fix; we need only become aware of our inherent goodness and accept it.

As we grow in our confidence in seeing things as they are, we can face political, religious, and familial hostilities directly. While this doesn't mean navigating these situations will be pain-free, it does mean that we can be present with those feelings and at the same time hold space for ourselves without wavering.
